Hot Keys Piano Tutor: Book 1

Books and CDs | Piano

Publisher: Kevin Mayhew Ltd.
Series: Hot Keys Piano
Format: Books | Instrumental Tutor

Created by Sarah Watts and Rebecca Holt, the Hot Keys Piano course teaches instrumental technique and music literacy in a rounded and imaginative way. Both note reading and pattern recognition are of equal importance to creative opportunities such as composition, improvisation and playing by ear.

In Hot Keys Piano Tutor Book 1 the basics of reading music are clearly explained with handy diagrams and colourful illustrations. Duets are featured throughout the book to introduce ensemble playing, and improvisation and creativity are encouraged right from the start.

Although aimed at students from seven years upwards, the up-beat pieces in Hot Keys Piano Tutor Book 1 are just as suitable for older beginners.

A CD is included, featuring teacher and pupil parts, and MP3 backing tracks including a rhythm section are also available to download.

A lovely modern approach to learning the piano with appeal to older beginners. The CD accompaniments are a great encouragement to practise and the colourful presentation is very attractive.

A very concise, methodical approach starting at the basics and gradually intruducing new notes.

I was surprised that the Bastien level 1 book had a dotted note and rests in the first exercise. Hot Keys is better for a beginner.

Very straightforward - step by step tuition with visual help for students and good ideas and reminders at every stage. I particularly like the 'invitation to improvise' established right from the start, and the number of teacher accompaniments.
Could be too easy for a highly motivated student
