      Musicroom Reviews

The "Panikhida" is an Orthodox Memorial service, of which this is a complete musical setting intended to be performed complete, although individual sections could be extracted and performed as anthems in their own right. Choir directors who are usually put off by the polychoral textures of John Tavener's music need not hesitate to look at this one: the music stays mainly in four parts (SATB) throughout, and the use of simple tonality and logical voice-leading should make for direct and straightforward singing. The main difficulty lies in the chanted portions of text; these will need careful training for both Choir and Priest! The score will need some careful deciphering, as it reproduces the composer's (not always legible) manuscript.
