Whitstable, Kent Flute beginner, experienced in
- I bought "Tone" Volume one + CD.
You will find the long tonesthat are essentail practice for all of us flautists. The different regiters long tones exercises will really helpI particularly like the classic, but pretty exercises for tone colour.
Suffice it to say that the book is well presented on all aspects of tone.
T.W. makes plenty of reference to the other practice bppks. I did buy teh compendium (Book one to five without the CD)
The CD is organised a little chaotically, because T.W wants to emphasize what is most improtant to him to start having a good tone. That means that the CD starts at p 35! It doesn't follow the order of the book, but follows which idea seems to lead on, in T.W. 's mind. However, it is nice to hear how he approaches tone by example given in the CD, so you have a point of reference.
I am a beginner. My teacher told me that this book is for advanced learners. I still find useful exercises to adopt as a beginner, even if I have to slow the tempo down!
An excellent buy with the CD.
In my opinion, It needs to be part of the other books on practice which can be bought separately or in one compendium (with or without CD).
The whole series of Practice books are essential and are a reference for learning for long years to gain a thorough experience fo what the beauty of the flute is like. Whether you buy just this Volume one on Tone, or, even better , the whole Books (one to five and the sixth), you would make an excellent ac quisition that will ehlp you thoroughly in your learning of the flute. Highly recommended, for beginners or advanced learners.
- Trevor Wye keeps referring to "The proper flute playing" which is a companion to the practice bookand to "The advanced Practice". I did buy them eventually and find them very useful,. But T. W. could have incorporated all these explanation in the book of practice. However, these latter books are useful, but it is more expenses!
