Books and CDs | Piano

Publisher: Hal Leonard
Format: Books | Instrumental Tutor

Piano Adventures is an exciting, comprehensive Piano method that teaches children analysis, creativity and musical expression.

This Level 2A Lesson And Theory Book provides a step-by-step approach to the 8th-note rhythm patterns, major and minor 5-finger scales and chords, the phrase and transposition.

It covers a wide range of musical styles from jazz to classical, including melodies of Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn and Vivaldi.

Expressive pieces are featured, with teacher duets that build articulation and phrasing.

Discovery questions, creative activities and theory pages help to develop the student's "musical mind".

A CD is included, featuring imaginative, orchestrated accompaniments which encourage expressive playing, rhythmic accuracy and practice time.

This version is the new, Anglicised edition.

The mix of theory puzzles and info with pieces makes this much more usable than juggling two separate books and integrates the theory knowledge better with the pieces. The pieces have always been great in this series, but the addition of the fabulously-produced CD adds a whole new dimension. Proper orchestral and band accompaniments - excellent quality. My students love doing a final performance with the CD backing once they can play them fluently. Just wish the CD was available separately, as I still have a couple of non-CD copies of the book.
One or two bits of terminology are more US/Australian and not the standard words used in the UK eg fermata rather than pause. So teachers need to look out for these but they are easily explained to students as you go through and there are not many of them.

I think this series is very good - all the children who are using it, like the music - I like the fact that the theory and techniques are incorporated with the pieces - no children find exercises and theory boring - they all love to write in the theory. I find some younger (eg 5/6 year olds ) need a different approach - but eventually I get to these books at the end .
It doesn't introduce quavers and alterations until quite late -
