'Förvillelser (Delusions)' was composed in 2005 for the Royal Academic Orchestra of Uppsala University (Kungliga Akademiska Kappelet) and the trumpeter Urban Agnas. The work consists of five movements of which the last two are played attacca. I consider them to be five independent musical images rather than a “voyage” from one point to another.
The title comes from the novel “Förvillelser” by the Swedish novelist Hjalmar Söderberg (1869-1941). The main protagonist of that work is a young man drifting aimlessly in a Stockholm described by the author in a highly lyrical manner. He gets involved in amorous affairs and financial difficulties and longs for something indefinite, while his destiny gradually slips away between his fingers. The trumpet part in my piece may be seen as a musical portrait of this literary figure: a capricious, romantic observer caught against the backdrop of a bustling city, the orchestra.
