John Tavener: As One Who Has Slept

Books | Double Choir

Publisher: Chester Music
Composer: John Tavener
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work

The mood of As One Who Has Slept, taken from the great liturgy of St. Basil on Easter Saturday morning, is full of awe, silence and expectation. The atmosphere is deeply solemn as we stand before the greatest mystery of our salvation.
This work (for unaccompanied double choir - SATB and SSATB) was commissioned by Winchester Cathedral, and was first performed in January 1997 by the Winchester Cathedral Choir conducted by David Hill.

        Musicroom Reviews

A potent Eastertide piece, ideal as an introit or Communion motet, especially if a more restrained or contemplative style is desired. It is one of Tavener's more accessible works, although sopranos will need to be confident about dividing three ways and all voices will need to be capable of sustaining long phrases. (Note that there is an error in the score: the metronome mark should read minim = 60, rather more manageable than crotchet = 60!)
