The Lamb is John Tavener's setting of William Blake's poem for unaccompanied SATB (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass) choir.

John Tavener's mesmerising choral work The Lamb has been a firm favourite since its composition in 1982. Audiences love the beautiful simplicity of the words and the lush harmonies that the different Vocal parts create. The piece was composed by Tavener in just one afternoon, and was dedicated to his nephew's third birthday. Although the piece is unaccompanied, a Piano accompaniment is included for rehearsal purposes.

This particular piece is challenging yet rewarding, with divergent, almost discordant parts in the first verse, as the poem asks ambiguous questions. During the second verse, however, the song breaks into an uplifting harmony as the poem resolves to an epiphany. When performed well, The Lamb is quietly atmospheric and a joy to hear.

So for something special for your four-part choir to perform, John Tavener's The Lamb is a hauntingly pretty piece that is sure to leave your audiences speechless.

        1. This is an exquisite piece.
        2. Looks easy, but does require work to do it justice. However, that work is well-rewarded. We sing it with 10 singers and love it.

Difficult 1st verse being almost discordant but then resolves into the most scrumptious back bending 2nd verse

Sang this for the first time this Christmas. Not as difficult as it sounds. Really enjoyed it

Ce produit est très satisfaisant; écriture claire, facile à déchiffrer,ce qui permet à de non lecteurs ou lecteurs moyen de suivre la partition pendant l'étude de l'oeuvre.

A good little piece. Best sung unaccompanied, but your singers need to be confident and in tune to pull this off. Not hard notes wise, but the difficulties come from putting the palindromic parts together - they overlap and are, at times, a tone apart making tuning difficult. But, the piece is worth the effort and time and is a fantastic quiet piece. My church choir sung this as a quiet piece in the middle of a noisy carol service - very effective.

I heard this piece more than 20 years ago and never forgot it. This past Christmas eve I was listening to the King's College Lessons and Carols through NPR in the US and heard it again! What a thrill. It is one of the most simple, yet beautiful choral works I think I have ever come across in my life.

A real gem. Not the easiest piece to learn but definitely worth the effort. This is atmospheric, tender and devotional.

Très beau morceau, très recueilli. Contraste fort entre les dissonances des couplets et l'harmonie profonde du refrain. L'édition pourrait être davantage lisible.
