Ready, Steady Recorder! is a colourful Recorder tutor for early starters which guides children from the very beginning, including how to hold a recorder properly. Key symbols are explained at the outset and repeated throughout to encourage and aid learning. Notes are introduced slowly and clearly, enabling good technique and musical literacy.

There are plenty of short pieces with CD accompaniments at all stages, many of which have funny words or actions. Rhythms are clapped out, musical terms and symbols explained simply and games help promote understanding, all of which make this new book comprehensive yet enjoyable, easy to follow and fun.

Great for youngsters to be able to play along with the CD right from the very beginning.

Lots of variety of activities, building in theoretical as well as practical knowledge,

I am really enjoying using the book to teach, I play along as well, such good fun!
Absolutely nothing, but just one question - is there a similar tutor aimed at older beginners??

This is the best recorder tutor I have found. I like the Red Hot series, but find it moves rather quickly for younger children. I have started this with Reception class this week and they love it. I've delved in further on with my Year 1, 2 and 3 children. The favourite pieces so far are the Hairy Spider and Smelly Cheese. Try buying their Teachers Pack (direct from Kevin Mayhew) my children love the progress charts. We have one per class on the wall and they are very competitive as to which class can play which notes! AN AMAZING PUBLICATION !!!

Another great resource from Sarah Watts - this new book has been such a success for my wider ops class recorder teaching - excellent backing tracks - cheerful as always - and great fun - just what music making should be -"bobby brown" has been a real hit with years 2 to 4. Can totally recommend.

I'm not sure that this is a terribly original recorder tutor, but it does fit in well alongside 'Red Hot Recorder Tutor' and 'Red Hot Dots' as used in general class music making. With all three of Sarah Watts' books you do have ideal materials for a whole range of high quality class music making.

I've just started teaching recorder at KS2 but this book has really helped! The accompanying CD has all the backing tracks for the tunes which saves me accompanying them and the kids have loved it so far! Long may it continue.

This book is an excellent alternative to Red Hot recorder, and is aimed at younger learners. There are plenty of pieces for each note, and the font is bigger. There is a fanfare to "Take a bow" at the end of each section, and there are lots of silly songs that will appeal, as well as Jazzy backing tracks. Musically good, and lots of fun.

I am delighted that Sarah Watts has produced another excellent recorder tutor. As with Red Hot Recorder the tunes have her up-tempo accompaniments on CD, which make them so enjoyable for children to play. I wish her music had been available for all the years I was teaching.

Having used this in my school, I can safely say this is another brilliant tutor from Sarah Watts - it is very clear and very easy to follow at home for my pupils but also in big classes, too! I have found the additional teaching pack useful, too as it has everything else I need to make teaching this easy and successful.
