Jerome Kern: Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (Novello Ladies' Barbershop)

Books | SSAA

Catalogue No: NOV161920
Composer: Jerome Kern
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work
Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man was a song with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, composed for the musical 'Showboat'. Associated with many of the greatest singers ever, this beautiful work about forbidden love is a touching and heartbreaking ballad.

Nicholas Hare's beautifully crafted arrangements for SSAA are suitable for anything from four to four hundred singers. He has added helpful performance notes for each of the songs and the arrangements are notated on two staves for easy Piano rehearsal. The sound of a Ladies' Barbershop singing this smooth tune with romantic overtones and heart rending undertones would be a memorable event for all involved. It's a fun song to sing and the bittersweet harmonies make it all the more emotional.

A series of outstanding songs, taken from the bestselling Close Harmony Ladies' Barbershop Songbook, selected for their appropriateness for female singers, arranged for close-harmony quartets or women's choirs.

A great song and familiar to many
This was recommended to me as a piece suitable for introducing Barbershop to singers. The music is difficult to read as it is quite small and four parts are set across two staves and the harmonies are not easy. At a workshop we managed to achieve the first 6 1/2 bars only and had to move on to try other things or the whole afternoon would have been spent on just one piece. The resulting sound was lovely but this is more suited to a group of experienced readers or those who have already had a go at barbershop, but not beginners to this style of music. Disappointed.
