Paul Mealor: Wherever You Are - SSA Version

Books | SSA, Piano Accompaniment

Publisher: Novello
Composer: Paul Mealor
Format: Sheet Music | Vocal Work
Written for SSA chorus and Piano. This is the original arrangement as sung by the Military Wives Choir.

Commissioned by Gareth Malone for Series Four of BBC TV's 'The Choir' and first performed by Malone and the Military Wives' choir as part of The Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 12th November 2011 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen.

A favourite for the 2011 Christmas Number One, with support from radio DJ Chris Evans who has suggested every choir in the country should sing this song, it's the biggest threat to X-Factor chart domination this year.

The text is taken from poems, letters and prayers written by the Military Wives, selected and adapted by Paul Mealor, and a passage from the Book of John:

Wherever you are, my love will keep you safe;
My heart will build a bridge of light, across both time and space.
Wherever you are, our hearts still beat as one,
I hold you in my dreams each night, until your task is done.

Light up the darkness, my wondrous star,
Our hopes and dreams, my heart and yours, forever shining far.
Light up the darkness, my prince of peace;
May the stars shine all around you, may your courage never cease.

Wherever I am, I will love you day by day,
I will keep you safe, cling on to faith, along the dark, dark way.
Wherever I am, I will hold on through the night;
I will pray each day, a safe return, will look now to the light.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

        Beautifully sentimental, emotional, beautifully arranged with soloists and chorus and unison . The range for female voices is explored very cleverly and the overall impact of this song is very strong and powerful in its simplicity. Super song.

        The music was very easy to learn. A group of amateur singers who cannot read music very well learnt it in one rehearsal.

        Musicroom Reviews

        I ordered two copies of this - one for me and one for our choir conductor, hoping she will order lots more copies for our choir to sing next year! It is such a beautiful piece, and not too challenging, though some of the solo soprano line is rather high!

        Beautiful song, well written. Very interesting and challenging piece for a good female choir. Solo part adds interest. This will become a classic for this time of year.

        A beautiful arrangement, carefully composed to enhance the emotion of the lyrics.

        Great music.

        Our choir tried it for the first time on Tuesday and were very impressed by it. It does have some rather high notes [a top A flat and an optional top B flat] which some of our sopranos struggle to get, but I still think it deserves a 5-star rating.

        After finding out that we were going to learn this piece in our Singing Group, it took less than 24 hours for me to order and receive my own copy. provides a truly excellent service

        This is a beautiful song. The words have been written as a reflection of love and is very personal for the people who first sang it. This song is destined to become a classic and be sung by many choirs, and probably adapted for soloists for decades to come.

        A delightful song with lovely harmonies, perfect for ladies' voices.

        This is a beautiful song with meaningful lyrics. However, the arrangement has a wide range, which is probably all right for young voices, but might provide more problems for more mature voices as there is a top b flat and several other very high notes. Highly suitable for a younger choir. I am sure that it will prove very popular with many audiences.

        Brilliant, we play it with a group of harps (no voices)..... it sounds lovely

        I nearly returned my 36 copies because the print seemed very small however I asked my choir to try out the copies and they managed to read it.
