Kathy Blackwell/David Blackwell: Cello Time Starters

Books and CDs | Cello

Series: String Time
Format: Books | Instrumental Tutor
Building on the success of the Cello Time series, Cello Time Starters provides the best possible foundation for the budding string player. Carefully paced to suit young learners, the book supports players through the important early stages, step by step-from how to hold your instrument and bow, through basic notation, to pieces using the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers. Packed with quizzes, games, and songs, as well as colour illustrations to demonstrate each stage, Cello Time Starters also includes a CD of performances and backing tracks to encourage and enhance progress throughout.

The Starters books provide a thorough pedagogical approach that supports the early years of learning up until the end of Joggers, and the Starters and Joggers books work well when used in conjunction.

Have only just started using it with a pupil, but so far, so good. It's colourful and attractive to my yr 3 pupils. It gives exercises at the beginning (often accompanied by a rap) to think about cello-hold and bow-hold. They can make up little tunes (which they can write in their books) using the open string names.

          Musicroom Reviews

Purchased for 7yr old beginner. Bold clear text and really good diagrams and illustrations throughout, taking you from letters names to full Bass Clef standard notation.Fun raps used to teach the names of the strings/parts of the bow & cello. i.e naming all the parts of the cello to tune of Head Shoulders Knees and Toes. This book TRANSFORMS simple pizzicato drills into TUNES!!! "DDDD GGGG DDDD GGDD" is not all that inspiring - but put the backing track with it and suddenly you have "Let's all play Pizzicato" to the folk tune of "what can we do with the drunken sailor" – CD transforms simple drills into meaningful and tuneful pieces - right from the beginning the child is making REAL MUSIC that is really catchy and they delight in playing. Daughter’s favourite in this book is "popcorn" - On paper a very simple tune, on open strings but it employs 4th finger LH pizzicato to make the "POP" of the popcorn... your child is delighting in the Pop of the popcorn - whilst unwittingly having their 4th finger strengthened ready for string stopping!!! This is such a fun book which has good technique hidden throughout.
