Charles-François Gounod, 1818-1893, was a French composer best known for his Ave Maria, based on the C Major Prelude by J.S. Bach, and his opera, Faust.
With over 200 composition, however, there's so much more to Gounod's work than his Ave Maria and Faust. The opera Romeo & Juliet, his Requiem and Messe Solennelle make up a rich choral catalogue, as well as works for orchestra and ensemble.
In 2018 we celebrate the 200th year since Gounod's birth.
Faust is a grand opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto from Michel Carré's play Faust et Marguerite, in turn loosely based on von Goethe's Faust, Part One.
Here, Anna Nebrebko sings Marguerite's aria, Je vis de me voir.
