Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande et Allegro is a sublime addition to the Alto Saxophone repertoire.

Many of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande et Allegro, where the texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard, and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's F minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for a thoroughly enjoyable and delightful performance!

Aria by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is a lyrical piece written in 1936 for advanced Alto Saxophone players. Technically and musically challenging, being able to master vibrato and control your instrument well will be greatly beneficial to effective playing of this piece.

Contemporary composer Amy Quate works in a wide variety of musical styles, forms and media. Composed in 1982 and dedicated to saxophonist Debra Richtmeyer, Light of Sothis creatively depicts the brightest star in heaven.

Sothis, now called Sirius, is the star aspect of the goddess Isis, whose light confines the cycles of nature which bring beauty, prosperity and life. Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire, Sicilienne being no exception.

After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire, as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. German baroque composer, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, becoming a composer against his family's wishes. However, his musical career saw him hold important positions and, to this day, he remains a major composer. His sublime Sonata in C minor for Oboe is superbly arranged for Alto Saxophone by contemporary French saxophonist, Jean-Marie Londeix.

Telemann composed his Sonata in C minor for Oboe whilst in service to the German Royal family. During this time, he composed a wealth of instrumental music, including Sonatas and Concertos. Londeix's arrangement for Saxophone of Telemann's Sonata includes adaptions for the instrument, such as dynamics, phrase marks, performance and tempo directions, articulation and breath marks, making the baroque genre accessible to the Saxophone, a relatively modern instrument.

French composer Joseph Edouard Barat (1882-1964) studied at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a military bandmaster in Lyon. It is clear that his compositions are influenced by his work with military bands, as is the case with his popular Fantaisie in E? minor.

Composed in 1958, towards the end of the composer's life, this Barat work is adaptable to both Cornet and Trumpet. The piece contains many tempo changes and lots of dynamic contrast, making for a dramatic yet enjoyable performance. Often performed for exams and solo recitals, Barat's Fantaisie in E? minor remains popular to this day.

Pierre Lantier (1910-1998) won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1937 and is remembered for a variety of works, most significantly his Sicilienne for Alto Saxophone and Piano.

Based on a Cuban Contradanza, it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition, the Trumpet is a substitute for the Voice. Sonata is a piece for Bb Soprano Saxophone and Piano composed by G. P. Telemann (1681-1767) and reviewed by Jean-Marie Londeix. Highly melodious, this piece, subtitled “Sicilianna”, is quite challenging (upper intermediate/advanced level) and lasts 7 and a half minutes.

The four parts of this piece are: 1. Andante (12/8 – tempo 50), 2. Spiritoso (3/4 – tempo 100), 3. Andante (4/4 – tempo 72) and Vivace (2/4 – tempo 120).

Jean-Marie Londeix is a musician who studied the Saxophone and the Piano. He also had some strong knowledge of chamber music, harmonies and of music history and obtained a First Prize and a Prize of Honour at the Paris Conservatoire.

Armenian composer and pianist, Alexandre Aroutiounian (1920-2012) was awarded many prizes for his compositions throughout his career. His Aria and Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano is little-known, yet it is a sublime addition to the modern repertoire.

Aroutiounian's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian's works, further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of two movements, the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters.
