Kaija Saariaho is a prominent member of a group of Finnish composers and performers who are now, in mid-career, making a worldwide impact. She studied composition in Helsinki, Freiburg and Paris, where she has lived since 1982. Her studies and research at IRCAM have had a major influence on her music and her characteristically luxuriant and mysterious textures are often created by combining live music and electronics.
The inspiration for NoaNoa came to Saariaho whilst she was working on music for the ballet Maa. 'I wanted to write down, exaggerate, even abuse certain Flute mannerisms that had been haunting me for some years, and thus force myself to move into something new'. NoaNoa is the work of a team, and many details in the Flute part were worked out with Camilla Hoitenga. The Electronic part was developed under the supervision of Jean-Baptiste Barriere with Xavier Chabot as programmer.
This CD-ROM contains software for the work's performance.
