Smike is a stunning musical in two acts, written and composed in 1971 by Roger Holman and Simon May. It has all the ingredients for your performance in school or amateur dramatics society. A lively pop musical, it is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ celebrated novel Nicholas Nickleby. The story sees a group of restless school children go back in time to the world of Charles Dickens and discover that there are plenty of advantages to living in the 20th century.

With memorable tunes and harmonies, plenty of movement, colour and humour, it is ideal for young performers and has been written specifically with a large cast of youngsters in mind.

Arranged for Piano, Vocal and Guitar, this is the complete Vocal Score and contains full lyrics and Keyboard and guitar accompaniments for every song in the play. The Libretto is also available (AV51860).

Rating Review
Customer Rating This is an excellent musical if your are looking for something different and new to do. Yes, it does have overtones of the Oliver story, but there again, it was written by Charles Dickens. I feel that Roger Holman, Simon May (Eastenders-fame) and Clive Barnett have made a good job of turning this into a musical.
Freely adapted from Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby, this musical opens in a contemporary school where a new English teacher finds it difficult to gain the interest of his class. He overcomes this problem when he hits on the idea of turning the book they are studying, Nicholas Nickleby, into a musical. We are swept back in time to the misery of Dotheboys Hall, where life is a matter of survival; avoiding the leaden hand of Mr Squeers and the daily dose of brimstone and treacle! The story ends happily with the children overpowering their captors: we return to the present day and find the class has learnt many lessons from the exercise.
There are some excellent numbers and opportunity to do some original choreography. The level of singing required needs to be good for the main characters. You definitely need a good tenor for Nicholas. Squeers has great opportunity for character acting.
The music, once learned will be truly memorable and I can guarentee all those taking part will have the tunes humming in their heads for weeks after the production is over!
You can be as lavish with set and costume or as simple as you wish. I do have to say that the orchestral set of parts we hired proved far too demanding for the pupils at my school and I would grade them between 7 - 8 (ABRSM level). I am sure you would get permission to adapt for pupils to play. We decided just to use the conductors score on piano. You will definitely need to hire that! A word of warning - the song words in the libretto are not in the same order as the score so careful planning in the initial stages is essential.
It is a great piece to do and will have the kids wanting to do other shows. I highly recommend this for first-timers to musicals and to others who would like to try something not so familiar.

Customer Rating Brilliant - easy to follow and learn

Customer Rating Lovely arrangments of all the songs from Smike although piano part is very bare in parts due to the nature of the production orchestration.
