Widely regarded as the culmination of French romanticism on the organ, Widor's symphonies include some of the most frequently performed and recorded works in the modern organ repertoire. Most of these "symphonies" - so called to emphasise the orchestral wealth of timbres offered by the new French organs - were written specifically to exploit the capacities of the modern Cavaille-Coll organ, especially the rich-toned five-keyboard instrument at St-Sulpice in Paris. Presented here in two inexpensive (this being the first), well-made volumes they offer a splendid resource for organists and all music lovers.

First 5 symphonies complete in 1 edition - which I don't think you can get elsewhere (usually sold separately). I'm told it is an early version of many of the movements (Widor reworked many of them slightly). This is most noticeable on the final few bars of the toccata from No 5 - which is slightly different from what you expect. Otherwise it is a great resource and has encouraged me to learn bits from the lesser known symphonies. Good price compared to other editions.
The print is a little faint - but not a major issue. The main issue is the book isn't ringbound and doesn't lie that flat. Also editorially the page turns are at odd places for several movements (i.e. a 2 page movement will have a turn in the middle) and the toccata from V has a turn at the end of page 1 - making 5 turns necessary when other editions only have 4.

Good value and well printed.
This is not based on the composer's latest version of some of the works. There are some significant differences from the well-known version of movements in No.5 for example.

Customer Rating These notes are the best of all. I love them.

Customer Rating The Dover editions of Widor`s symphonies are certainly excellent value for money, though as a "reprinted" edition (presumably taken from the original, allegedly mistake-filled French editions) the quality of the imprint does leave something to be desired in places. Some of the movements are of only moderate difficulty, but some require a virtuosity which few will possess - the tempo markings particularly, may have to be taken with a pinch of salt! (This book contains the famous Toccata in F, with what is alleged to be the `original` ending.)

Customer Rating Beautifully printed copies, well bound. But be aware that this edition is from 1887. The 1927 edition is the most accepted and used version and generally is the most musically coherent.
