Description

Ireland's organ music belongs largely to the early years of his composing career (1902-1911). The 'Meditation' on John Keble's Rogationtide Hymn, however was written in 1958, and was his very last composition. Edited by Robert Gower.

Musicroom Reviews

Rating Review
Customer Rating When originally written, Ireland's earlier organ music was equally popular in the concert hall as it was in the average church organist’s introductory voluntary repertoire for weddings and other lighter services where music needs to be gentle on the ear. With the revival of interest in Romantic organ music, Ireland's music may well prove similarly popular once again. Beware in performance, however, as clear phrasing is important if things are not to sound muddy and uninteresting.

Customer Rating Novello's easy-to-read (upright a4 format) collection of Ireland's original works (arrangements excluded) is very good value for money. Editor Robert Gower provides a useful preface with some basic biographical information, and editorial notes with a key to abbreviations. There is a list of suggested registrations for each piece (and many registrations are added in the musical text), although it is not clear how many of these registrations are the composer's original ones.
