I started piano lessons recently and the Hanson book was recommended by my teacher.
The exercises help to understand correct fingering .
This is really useful and I have done the first few excercises every day for 3 weeks and feel more confident already. Really good to understand the bass clef and make forth finger stronger.
For a younger learner it would be helpful to copy sections of the exercises onto manuscript paper as the full page could look a bit daunting to a new student.

These are useful exercises for the serious classical pianist, ie. Grade 5 or above. They require some discipline, as they're not designed to be fun (!) but are effective in strengthening the fingers when used regularly.

Staff Reviews

Staff Rating This book is both the saviour and bane of all pianists! The exercises are specially graded and get gradually more difficult as the book progresses. I have already noticed the improvement in my finger strength after practicing from this book for a few weeks. I would really recommend this book to either beginners or more advanced players. Whilst it is a fantastic book, you need to pace yourself so that you don’t get bored. Make sure you actually play some ‘proper music’ alongside this!

Customer Rating I've not had alot of chance to really get into this piano excersise book, but from what u have done from it, i feel, it's definitely beneficial for your finger strength, already my 4th and 5th on each hand are feeling a wee bit stronger and that's just by working on the first excersise. Definitely a book for the aspiring "Virtuoso", or just to get your fingers in good shape.

Customer Rating This will be any pianist best friend to have. Really does see some difference after playing exercise number 1 through to 4.
Good for 4th and 5th strength building especially for those with small hands.

Customer Rating An excellent book to develop the finger muscles. This book may be not very melodic, and very 'scalistic', but it teaches finger dexterity, and clarity on the piano.

Customer Rating It is really the very book I am after.

Customer Rating It is really the very book I am after.

Customer Rating A good, complete edition of this classic series of exercises. Be warned: there is no point undertaking exercises if they are being played with the wrong technique. Learn a good technique from a teacher who knows what they are talking about, and then use Hanon.

Customer Rating I have recently started to play the piano again after a break of many years and have found this book of exercises an invaluable aid for strengthening, and making more supple, my out of condition fingers.

Customer Rating Very good, great finger exercises for all. Beginner and advanced.

Customer Rating The Virtuoso Pianist is indispensable for beginners and professionals alike. The exercises serve brilliantly as 'warmers-up', and ideally the first twenty should be played by students before they attempt anything else. The fingering is especially useful, and regular practise will quickly strengthen the fingers. 'Lapsed pianists' like myself will find that even after a prolonged period of not playing at all, they will rapidly and painlessly enable you to reach your previous level of agility.
