Easy to moderately difficult pieces by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven – the three great classics of the “ Viennese School ” – form the main focus of this album. But these three ’greats’ were not the only composers to leave an imprint on piano music between 1760 and 1827.

Accordingly, this collection also contains appealing pieces by Mozart’s pupils Thomas Attwood and Johann Nepomuk Hummel and the composer-publisher Anton Diabelli . Works by such contemporaries as Anton Benda, Daniel G. Türk and James Hook also introduce pianists to the great expressive range of classical piano music.

As appealing in its contents as in its appearance, this collection is rounded off with annotated color illustrations of contemporary keyboard instruments. It consists entirely of original compositions accompanied by reliable fingering.

By focusing on relatively short pieces in a wide range of forms, the volume is ideal for adding variety to piano lessons while conveying a vivid impression of the major genres of classical piano music, from dances and variations to the nascent sonata form.

  • Rich selection of easy to moderately difficult original piano pieces by great classical composers
  • Judicious fingering suggestions
  • Readily affordable volume for piano lessons
  • Colour photos of historical instruments

Musicroom Reviews

Rating Review
Customer Rating The pieces in this book are described as ""easy to moderately difficult"" and one of them is currently on the ABRSM Grade 2 list, which is around my level. So I was disappointed to discover that out of 22 pieces, I would only find three or four of them achievable - and only with a great deal of practice - and the remainder look several grades away. I was also disappointed that what are described as ""annotated"" illustrations consist only of brief captions to the photographs. There are 4 full-page glossy photographs of early pianos which are very good quality, and the captions give manufacturer/location, date, compass, current location, catalogue number and photographer. This may be enough if that is all you are expecting, but I was expecting “annotated” illustrations to give more. Someone at a more advanced level would no doubt be able to make better use of this book than I can. Everybody’s definition of “easy” will be different, and everybody’s expectations will also be different, and hopefully this review will throw some light on what the publisher means by “easy to moderately difficult”, and also what is meant by “annotated” illustrations.
