Joining the Dots offers pianists lots of material to help build confidence and skill in sight-reading. The series brings together a range of activities to help students improve their sense of keyboard geography, helping them to read new music more quickly and easily.

The five books cover the requirements for ABRSM's sight-reading tests at each of Grades 1 to 5, and include:

  • many short, characterful pieces to sight-read, in a range of approachable musical styles
  • warm-up and technical exercises, to establish basic hand shapes and finger patterns within each key
  • simple improvisation exercises in which students can explore musical ideas and familiarise themselves further with the 'feel' of each key
  • longer solo pieces and a duet, for additional sight-reading practice or to learn quickly and play through for fun

I like the whole series for the musicianship aspects particularly, and this book naturally follows on from Books 1 and 2. It is good that in earlier grades the student has been given experience of moving from a strictly five finger position. Therefore, as this is required in the Grade 3 ABRSM exam the next stage is reached gradually
I don't think there are any.

Customer Rating Really like these new teaching aids. They are wonderful for building up Sight-reading techniques and key recognition and can be used in lessons or at home. A more fun way to approach sight-reading.

Customer Rating very useful sightreading book - has filled a need

Customer Rating Much more interesting than working through Paul Harris' Improve Your Sight-Reading books (sorry, Paul!!)

The pieces are tuneful and contain good tips dotted throughout the book to help with identifying keys, working on unusual rhythms etc.

Customer Rating I have found all the books in this series very useful. I tend to use them as little exercises for pupils to work on at home for a week. This way pupils can be introduced to new rhythms and notes in bite-sized pieces. They have worked very well in this way to encourage the "aural" learner to become more confident in reading the music without teacher help.
