Description

Young People's Guide to Classical Music fills the need in the market for comprehensive classical music literature written specifically for the younger generation. It covers all of the information needed for a thorough understanding of the elements that comprise classical music.

Written primarily for people unfamiliar with these elements, this is a practical handbook as well as a reference. Included in the section on musical periods are segments that explain the general history and background of each era so that the changes in the music world are in context.

This book is for the parents of music students, parents who want to nurture an interest in classical music in their children, young adults who already have an interest in this field, educational institutions that provide instruction in music, and adults who wish to increase their own familiarity with classical music and its composers.

Staff Reviews

Staff Rating I have to say that when I first picked this book up I felt that the cover didn't quite match the "young people" focus of the title. However, they say you shouldn’t judge a book before you've actually looked inside and, having done this, I was actually very pleasantly surprised. Within a space of about 255 pages, it breaks the classical music world down into logical, bite-sized sections, allowing one to quickly find concise, easy-to-read information on just about anything. Topics covered include: types of instruments, the differences between the major "classical" styles and stand-out composers within these styles. I found the short section on the important role of the conductor particularly interesting and there is also a very helpful list of suggested listening broken down by period. Although this book might not initially come across as being very young people focused, the way it is laid out inside certainly would suit this audience and also makes it ideal for an adult who would just like a handy "dip in" information resource for all things classical.
