Pastorale brings together some of the finest choral music based on rural themes. This volume will provide material for any concert based on the broad theme of nature, and would be an ideal compilation for any summer's serenade or open-air concert. The collection includes works by Britten, Finzi, Vaughan Williams and Canteloube. The anthology has been put together by Nigel Perrin, former King's Singer, choral expert and conductor of the Bath Camerata.

The Boosey & Hawkes Concerts for Choirs series is an innovative approach to concert planning for choirs. Each volume contains a wealth of material to help the choral director assemble a concert programme - all from one volume. The anthology draws on the vast Boosey and Hawkes archive and also includes many specially-composed or newly-arranged pieces.

Musicroom Reviews

Rating Review
Customer Rating An interesting concept - an anthology of partsongs about nature - and it works pretty well.

Most songs are a capella, except for one by Delius, and a cycle of five French songs by Massenet. All the rest have piano reductions for rehearsal.

The Saint-Saens and Stenhammar are late 19th century and everything else comes from the first half of the 20th. Kodaly's offering (for SSSSA) is wordless, but the other non-British composers write in their own languages - that's French for everyone except for the Stenhammar in Swedish.

Alas, there's no phonetic pronunciation guide, but an appendix gives original words, translations, composition dates and durations for all works.

Many items are mainstream songs which choirs will want to have. Putting them in one volume is useful, and there are some interesting novelties as a bonus.

For the price, this is an excellent book.
