Rating Review
Customer Rating Philip Glass has composed a genius work of intellectually astounding and captivating music. In order to compose music that would fit the story line for 'The Hours', he had to innovate and incorporate what an audience was going to perceive. A complex story line calls for a complex score. Glass was able to blend changing flow with a steady rhythm producing an ongoing score that could ebb and flow with the plot. As he made transitions between characters he reintroduced certain melodies, but never interrupted the forward movement. The piano was his instrument of choice because of its ability to enter and exit different stages smoothly and steadily. The emotionally captivating tune is used to lour in viewers and listeners and set them at ease to be able to follow the uncertainty of The Hours. An unsurpassed and remarkable score with so much meaning and passion woven in between the staff. A must have composition for anyone wishing to set sail in a breeze.

Customer Rating Great film score. I highly recommend it.

Customer Rating I bought this book when studying the film music of Phillip Glass. I was inspired after watching the 'The Hours' as the music is absolutely beautiful. The music is never too obvious and is always unobtrusive of the action on screen, but at the same time does a great job of setting the tone.

This is probably my favourite film score and I put it on the same level as the fantastic scores written by Howard shore or John Williams (however this is much different in style.)

I strongly recommend you buy the DVD and watch the special features. As a musician I found Phillip Glass' words on his music really interesting.

The pieces in the book aren't difficult to play but are a treat to listen to. Nothing harder than grade 4!

Customer Rating Philip Glass's music score makes this film the success it is, capturing all the complexities of mood and stirring emotions portrayed by the characters. No other music score could have befitted the film more, that I am certain. A true masterpiece!

Customer Rating A beautiful, haunting and sonorous score with moments of truly emotional power which effectively evoke, emphasise and act as counterpoint to the themes in Cunningham's novel. Glass uses a minimalist range of melodic and rhythmical material to convincingly convey the complexity of the film's characters, but also their interconnection, even across differing time periods, as well as their parallel fates.
