Rating Review
Customer Rating Good dvd if you are looking for something a little different, but if you are looking for something with the focus on banjo you should try something else.
This really does concentrate on the basics of jamming as a band but the included song sheet and the band leaving a space for you to add your own solo is a nice touch.
If you are familiar with the basic banjo chords its good fun to play along, but you wont actually learn any banjo you dont already know from this. However it does not pretend to be anything other than a guide to bluegrass jamming.
Sound quality was rather poor on my copy.

Customer Rating As a beginner (at bluegrass banjo), I found playing along with this DVD to be a real asset. Watching Pete Wernick carefully one can see, and hear, the difference it makes when, for instance, at certain times he plays a G (and other chords) further up the neck (transposition), licks he adds (often very simple) which bring the banjo part to life, the types of rolls he uses to complement the other band members instruments, and so on. It's also good practice to be forced to play at the right tempo and 'fix' mistakes and fumbles as they happen (not an uncommon thing at the moment). It is of course good fun too, one can't drive the other band members (clearly a nice bunch who enjoy playing) nuts by asking them to repeat the same song a dozen times! I don't know about you but I haven't managed to find a tutor or other folks to play with yet (not that I'd subject them to my playing just yet) so this for me is a tremendous help. I have also found it a good guide to my own progression, for instance, being able to play along comfortably with songs that I previously found difficult. I agree with the other reviewer regarding the sound, it's not the best I've heard (nor the worst) and it could do with being sharper and louder, but turning the volume up drowned out my own playing sufficiently for me to still enjoy it! My rating of 4 stars is because of the sound quality, not the content. Your mileage may vary of course depending on your ability, but for the beginner who's only just learnt the basics (e.g. me) I'd say this is a good next step.
