Description

Willie “The Lion” Smith made a huge contribution to the history of jazz. He reinvented stride piano and left behind a legacy of superb compositions. The Lion is perhaps best-known as the mentor and influence on the young Duke Ellington, and this book reveals a lot about the music scene in the 1920’s.

In this fantastic publication, self-confessed fan, Michael “Spike” Wilner, has carefully transcribed eight of The Lion’s signature compositions for Piano solo and, in his essay, discusses the stylistic and harmonic techniques that demonstrate the Lion was a deep thinking and technical musician.
