Guidelines On Harmony is to be used with Workbook On Harmony (one for each grade 6, 7 and 8). The series provides that the very basics of harmony and the rules of harmony are kept to a minimum but with an emphasis on the most important points to give a thorough understanding of each topic.

The exercises are carefully graded and must be worked at the point suggested, enabling the student to move straight into the exercises given in the ABRSM Theory in Practice or other boards of theory examination. It is harmony written in the simplest possible way to make the teaching and learning of harmony less frustrating.

I bought this for my nephew who is keen to compose pieces but hasn't had any formal musical education. He is finding it very useful, and interesting. It's certainly easier to understand than the theory books I used 50 years ago!

Overall its not a bad book, cleanly presented and clear to read.
Although they do give examples and explain how to work through problems, its a bit lacking in full detail and doesn't really explain fully.
