Description

One of the consummate stylists of jazz piano, Teddy Wilson was also extremely popular not only with listeners but fellow musicians. Beginning in the late 1930s and continuing through at least the following decade he was thought of as the ideal pianist. This CD includes the Keystone Transcriptions with Teddy Wilson on solo piano (1939/40) and the Associated Transcriptions with the Teddy Wilson Sextet with Emmett Berry, Benny Morton, Edmond Hall, Slam Stewart and Big Sid Catlett (1944), both recorded in New York. Also included are two sessions from Copenhagen with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Bjarne Rostvold (1968) and with Jesper Lundgaard and Ed Thigpen (1980).

Musicroom Reviews

Rating Review
Customer Rating As Brian Priestley observes in his excellent liner notes, many people had a tendency to downgrade Teddy Wilson’s importance as a jazz artist because of one thing, of which Wilson himself was completely innocent: legions of cocktail piano players absorbed aspects of his style, thus superficially sounding like him, and vice versa. But make no mistake: this is the real thing, no matter whether it is the (little known) 1939 transcriptions, Wilson as a band pianist in the 1944 sextet recordings featuring the strong (but today largely forgotten) voices of Emmett Berry and Benny Morton, or the Copenhagen trio recordings of 1968 and 1980. In particular, the two latter sessions (12 of the CD’s 22 titles) offer piano playing that mixes an almost dignified elegance with a mature vitality.
