Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767) paid particular attention to the field of chamber music without bass. Intended for the amateur or student, these pieces are genuine examples of Baroque music displaying an original devotion to music the effect of which can still be felt today.

The 12 Fantasias for Violin without Bass, 1735, formally display a cyclic construction with numerous variants. Elements of the sonata, the concerto or the suite are taken up and expertly contrasted with one another. The richly developed part writing ensures full use of the playing possibilities of the instrument.

Leek, Staffordshire GB Lifelong violinist and teacher
It is surprising that these pieces are not better known. Less complex than Bach's partitas and sonatas for unaccompanied violin, and somewhat easier to play, they are nonetheless substantial, excellently crafted and enjoyable examples of a form of music that was more common than we now realise. Pieces of this kind may well have been improvised by accomplished violinists of the baroque period. They are of course beautifully and authentically performed on recordings by Andrew Manze.
