Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was an extremely talented American musician and civil rights activist, who is best known today for his 25 year collaboration with Duke Ellington. In Piano Passion, we have the rare opportunity to hear Strayhorn playing many of his own songs, as well as some he wrote with Ellington and others.
The first ten tracks on this CD were recorded in Paris during two midnight sessions in 1961, and were originally released on an LP called The Peaceful Side of Billy Strayhorn. To those another eleven tracks have been added here. Recorded at various dates in New York from 1946 and 1950, both Ellington and Strayhorn play the piano.
Filled with brilliant, playful, intimate and thoughtful touches, this emotive recording an absolute must for anyone who appreciates the golden era of Jazz.
