A haunting beautiful piece that is relatively easy for a choral society to sing.

Rating Review
Customer Rating The Son of God Mass by James Whitbourn is exciting and refreshing in its writing for choir, organ and soprano saxophone. Both the organ and choir parts are well within the reach of a moderate choir - there is one top B for the sopranos. What makes this work so outstanding is the saxophone part. A very good soloist is required who has a developed flair for inprovisation. The overall performance outcome is one of immense beauty; the saxophone part weaving its way around the often sustained/static chords of the choir. The saxophone is not used during the Ordinary movements of the Mass - it is reserved for the link passages of Introit, Kyrie Meditation, Pax Domini, Lava Me, and the Amen. The work can be performed as a recital work, or as part of a Eucharist service (as we did only yesterday!) with the interlude movements blending in with the spoken liturgy. The Lava me can be used as an effective Communion motet. I am delighted that our cathedral purchased this Mass and we will certainly be repeating it. An excellent addition to the choral music repertoire and one for which James Whitbourn must be congratulated.
