Rating Review
Customer Rating This book and CD are worth every penny. The author, Wolf Marshall, does a superb job of teaching some first class Scotty Moore licks. Burton and Garland ones are just as good. My guitar tutor is equally impressed... and he's been teaching for over 30 years. Wolf, please PLEASE write a Part 2 and include 'Blue Moon of Kentucky' and 'You're a heartbreaker'. In fact, include as many other early Elvis/Sun records that you can. BUY this NOW. You won't be disappointed!

Customer Rating This is more than a guitar instruction manual, this is a labour of love by Wolf Marshall who takes great pride in bringing guitar students this important lesson in rock and roll via the guitarists of Elvis Presley: Scotty Moore, Hank Garland and James Burton.

The guide includes a clear and accurate stereo split CD with the guitar track in one ear and the backing in the other allowing a separation of the guitar from the band. This assists learning greatly.

The book itself involves a brief overview of Elvis and his guitarists before Marshall covers all periods of Elvis's career and the excellent, distinctive playing of each of his guitarists. The Scotty Moore pieces cover his jazz inflected rock and roll playing using pick and fingers. These are, in fact, the more complicated pieces due to the use of basslines with the thumb. The Garland pieces involve his distinctive, attacking lead guitar while the Burton pieces involve his sublime chicken pickin' style expertly demonstrated by Marshall. What becomes clear is the interweaving nature of Elvis's guitarists: Burton's playing, for example, is undoubtedly influenced by Moore's earlier licks.

The breakdown of each track allows a piecemeal learning of some classic Elvis pieces and an ability to play in the style of each of his guitarists fluidly. I should add that the song choice serves the guitar playing rather than the usual list of hit singles.

I really cannot recommend this book enough. It is first class. Commendations to Wolf Marshall for covering these underrated guitarists who shaped rock and roll in the 20th century.
