Jazz Piano From Scratch is a complete step by step guide to playing jazz with confidence and style. Designed for the complete beginner, it breaks down the process into simple yet fun activities, with many musical examples to illustrate the points made. The accompanying CD provides examples, activities and some great trio paying to use as a backdrop to your own work.
The book deals with rhythm, harmony, melody, structure, chords and changes, modal jazz, blues style, chord substitutions, bebop, style and creativity, improvisation techniques and control.
These skills can be developed by any musician, and the book is designed to ease all players into jazz. It stands also as an indispensable companion to the Board's jazz piano syllabus, examining in Part III the different components of the exams and showing you how to prepare yourself thoroughly.

Very comprehensive but need someone to guide you through many of the tasks. Not really a book for beginners on their own.
Not enough CD song tracks to demonstrate and play along with particular pieces of music.

Redhill Surrey GB Ex semi pro piano
Explanations near the beginning of what music can mean to you and explanations later of technicalities like modal play and movement of chords. I bought it for my granddaughter hoping it will inspire her interest in jazz.
Perhaps a bit too technical but that's what music is and what the book seeks to teach.

Rating Review
Customer Rating A great, comprehensive guide. Tells you everything you need to know! Nice to use in conjunction with the ABRSM Jazz Piano syllabus, for adults who want to understand more about what they're playing.

Customer Rating This resource is ideal for taking someone through the early stages of jazz piano and also preparing pupils for the ABRSM jazz piano exams. But I have found it to be more than that: it is very useful for expanding a teacher's field of vision about possibilities in piano lessons.
Worth every penny.
