Rating Review
Customer Rating This is a good value collection of most of Ketelbey's famous pieces. I say 'most' because 'Bells across the Meadows' is missing, presumbly because of the multiplicity of publishers who served up Ketelbey's music over the years. The other favourites - In a Monastery Garden and In a Persian Market being the two best known - are present, together with less often heard titles, including the delicious 'Clock and the Dresden Figures', not a piece for the faint-hearted pianist, based as it is on a solo for piano with wind band (later orchestra) that Ketelbey himself used to play. The other pieces are of more moderate difficulty and, as always, great fun with memorable tunes throughout. Even light music enthusiasts occasionally deride his easy harmonies and occasional vulgarities, but that's rather missing the point of these works which stem from the need for intense character to be demonstrated in a few bars of music.
If you still gather round the piano for innocent entertainment, this is a volume you should have, complete with its excellent engraving and reproductions of the original sheet music covers.
