Bradford GB keen multi-instumentalist
a great variety of music to try edited to make it very accessible but without compromising the flavour of each piece. There are little bonuses. The bass line to the New Orleans tune (Marching Down St Claude) really catches the style well. which sets up the lead line to sound authentic. Hints on strange tunings I found insightful and helpful. A variety of time signatures enriches the collection, not least because the tunes in 2 each have a distinct time feel. The book is very well printed, the extra notes very helpful. The additional material on CD-Rom excellent. This is intelligent, and interesting, and musical. Highly recommended if you want to learn to play well and to do so with some insight. A rich starting point for adventurous improvisors.

Rating Review
Customer Rating I bought this book on spec. Having taken up a cornet late in life (I have been a semi-pro on double bass and saxes, as well as teaching classical guitar so am not a total beginner), I'm delighted with this book and CD/CD rom. Shanti Paul has written 12 pieces of music and 12 second parts which do everything claimed for them. Each piece teaches a different approach to the instrument in timbral and expressive terms. The variation in the regional styles is very cleverly used to tick off a whole series of performance skills, legato, long notes, a variety of attacks, rhythms, tempi, and harmonic and scalar variations. The Klezmer feels right, as does the Mexican, and indeed each piece is faithful to its regional setting. While feeling and sounding authentic all the music is very playable. Top notes are all reachable by intermediate players. The backings are excellent, there are some horrors out there but every track here is good. The bass line on the New Orleans March is wonderful and the piano part shows just what a tuba should play in this context. You get guitar chords which are pleasing too. It would not be difficult to take each piece and arrange it for a small group of intermediate players where each player would be developing some aspect of their musicianship.

Each tune carries supporting notes which are really helpful. I have got really excited about E half flat and how to play it. (Song for Sabahat).

I hope you can see why I have given it five stars. But if you have cloth ears and a very traditional and timid outlook on music I wouldn't bother. Well perhaps I don't mean that.

For my part I wish to congratulate the author, the publisher, and the backing band.
