Song For My Mother is a celebration of all that is lyrical and beautiful in music. It seemed to make absolute sense to dedicate this tune to my mother, a person who has always preferred a simple unadorned melody to the rhythmic excitement of jazz improvisation.
There should be a very strong sense of pulse, the tempo unvariable until the last six bars. However, the performance should never sound mechanical. The melody must "sing", the accompaniment extremely legato throughout. The pedal will help enormously in achieving this.
For Matt London.
