One of the great English popular art forms, the folk song can be painful, satirical, erotic, dramatic, rueful or funny. They have thrived when sung on a whim to a handful of friends in a pub; they have bewitched generations of English composers who have set them for everything from solo violin to full orchestra; they are sung in concerts, festivals, weddings, funerals and with nobody to hear but the singer.

The New Penguin Book Of English Folk Songs brings together all the classic folk songs as well as many lesser-known discoveries, complete with music and annotations on their original sources and meaning. Published in cooperation with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, it is a worthy successor to Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L.Lloyd's original Penguin Book of English Folk Songs.

Kecskemét Hungary GB I love folk songs!
Excellent state-of-the-format presentation; very clear; all notes from original plus very informative notes by Steve Roud ; it was an invaluable source for the portfolio of English folk songs I neede to compile as part of my work for a Master's degree in Kodály Pedagogy at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute, Kecskemét, Hungary. I left the hard back copy I purchased in November for use in the library there, as I consider it to be an essential book for the serious (and humourous!) study of English folk music! Thank you for publishing it! Now we need to sing them all, and get our children in state schools singing a good and appropriate selection of them! That's one of my aims for the next stage of my work now I'm returning to England. Anything you can do to help will be very interesting! Please use this e-address for communicating.
I can't think of any!
