Guitar Basics is a landmark method for young guitarists. It starts at absolute beginner level and progresses to Initial/Preparatory Grade. The method is set out in fifteen stages and contains original pieces and traditional tunes in an array of styles including classical, folk and world music as well as well-known favourite film and TV themes such as James Bond, Batman and The Flintstones.

There is a thorough introduction to standard notation, with sections on chords and TAB, whilst ensemble pieces are ideal for group teaching, including ‘Wider Opportunities’. The enhanced CD provides accompaniment parts, teachers’ notes and tips for parents which are easily downloaded, or it can be simply used to play the fun backing tracks!

I have only just started using this book. However, I am really impressed with the backing tracks which transform simple open string exercises to exciting performance pieces. I like the way it gets straight on to RH finger picking and also the the fact that it explores open strings straight away rather than starting on one string, adding the fingered notes moving to the next string and so on. Rhythm concepts are introduced straight away without using technical terms, which works well. This is my tutor book of choice from now on.
A little more explanation of the musical stave would help. (But not a complete in your face theory-of-everything-on-two-pages, like some other books!). The early pieces which are shown as simple pitch names could be tidied up a little. There are some 'rests' missing. Actually it would be good if they were printed larger and spread out a bit.

Very good backing tracks. Introduces interesting rhythms quite quickly compared to some methods that take a long time to introduce more complex rhythms.
On some pieces, the cd goes a little too fast for some slower learners, meaning pupils have to do quite a lot of work on the piece before being able to play with the backing track. But maybe that's not a bad thing...
