Composed by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with lyrics by Tim Rice, Chess quickly became a firm favourite with musical theatre enthusiasts following its release in 1986. Despite only having a three year run in London's West End, the show has been performed worldwide to great critical acclaim and in 2005 it came seventh in a BBC Radio 2 listener poll of the U.K.'s "Essential Musicals."
The musical's storyline centers around a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two men — an American and a Soviet — as they fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.
The song Anthem has recently enjoyed renewed popularity after it was performed by Josh Groban in the role of Anatoly Sergievsky in a rock concert revival of the musical. With a beautiful, flowing melody, combined with poignant lyrics that are eternally relevant, this song is a perfect choice for school concerts and other public performances. This version is for SSA choir.
