Sure on This Shining Night takes its text from a poem by the American journalist, author and film critic James Agee (1909-1955), published in 1934 in his only volume of poetry, Permit Me Voyage. In 1938, it was set to music by the celebrated American composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981) as No. 3 of his opus 13, a collection of four songs with lyrics from four different poets. It is arranged here for SATB by the contemporary arranger, teacher, and editor Emily Crocker, one of the leading experts in Children’s choirs. This easy arrangement of a classic art-song is ideal for developing choirs in secondary schools.
