Lord Jesus Christ! for High Voice and Piano comes from Samuel Barber’s 1954, one movement work: Prayers Of Kierkegaard. The text comes from the prayers and sermons of Danish theologian Soren Kierkegaard, who inspired and excited Barber him. The work is notable in that the composer has successfully conjoined aspects of medieval music into his usual blend of succulent, Romantic sounds and twentieth-century musical tendencies. Lord Jesus Christ! is a somewhat more tranquil than the sincerity of the rest of the suite.
