Description
It is market day - we are treated to all things vegetable and fruit, as well as an enormous array of wonderful hats.
Grandpère Pierre relishes speaking his broken English -language misunderstandings lead to some amusing dialogue. A wedding is scheduled at the Town Hall and every fabulous hat on sale in the market features in the wedding celebrations.
In all, quite a memorable day for everyone!
The play uses standard beginner’s French vocabulary and phrases Opportunities are given for pupils to write their own French lines.
English is also spoken albeit with a heavy French accent, which enables audiences and non-French speakers to easily follow the unfolding events.
There are four songs and lots of colourful actions and movement.

The plot of this musical has a contemporary and humorous story-line and is set in a French market, which is a riot of colour and activity. The accompanying CD Rom gives lots of manageable and effective ideas of how to present the musical, using simple and colourful props. It is clear that the production can involve any number of primary-aged children, from a class to an army, which makes it very versatile in a school setting.
There are plenty of opportunities for the children to practise and perform elementary French, both spoken and sung. The songs themselves are easy to learn with plenty of repetition, which is so important in learning and using a new language. Each song has an identity of its own, but towards the end three of the melodies are sung together to great effect.
Oh yes – the hats. You’ll need plenty! The final scene involves a synchronised hat-swap which is great fun and is sure to have performers and audience alike leaving the show with huge smiles, and waiting for the next highly-entertaining, child-friendly and exuberant musical from the pen of Alison Hedger.
