Customer Reviews

Rating Review
Customer Rating Martinu's Flute Sonata: truly my favorite 20th century sonata. With its distinctive Martinu style with hints of a Rhapsodical/Folk tune and jazz, the composer has been influenced by the bells of the church tower in which he grew up, the nationalist folk song style of his homecountry Bohemia, French Romantic style from his travels to Paris and Jazz from America where this amazing work was written.
It is a beautiful piece of music, the first movement being lyrical and folk-like, the second movement being slow, graceful, sad and romantic and the last movement being moving, fast, intense and jazzy.
I recommend this piece to anyone. It is a challenging piece musically, but a rewarding one once mastered.
Will

Customer Rating I am about to begin my study of this piece and I can't stop listening to my recordings of it. Also, the Sonata was influenced not only by the church bells from the tower where his father worked, but the whippoorwill - or the call of the bird - appears in the 3rd movement. A wonderful sonata - one of my favorites.
