Brahms' first Piano Concerto began life as a design for a symphony. However, daunted by the legecy of Beethoven, Brahms' inexperience caused him to reorganise the piece as a more modest Sonata for two Pianos. It was this Sonata that was finally expanded into this epic and tragic masterpiece that famously received a luke-warm response at the Leipzig premiere in 1859.
