Description

Mississippi John Hurt's appeal was universal, he was very much a musician of his time and place, playing within a tradition, but mapping out his own territory with subtleties of touch, phrasing and use of the guitar that were all his own. In this DVD, contemporary guitar legend John Miller presents instruction in John Hurt's repertoire, with songs chosen to showcase his playing in different keys. The accompanying booklet includes TAB/standard notation transcriptions and lyrics of the songs.

Rating Review
Customer Rating Relative to the Traum/Sebastian DVD, this one is for those who want to play note-for-note - recording references are given or, in the case of Lonesome Valley, the video of John Hurt - worth the money on its own! The tuition is all you would expect: clear and helpful. John Miller really feels the music.
If, like me, you're not at the level required to make full use of the DVD, a detour via David Hamburger's Fingerstyle Method (also available from Musicroom) is well worth it. He has a simplified version of Hurt's Since I've Laid My Burden Down, as well as a more complicated one with syncopation and chord substitutions. I've not yet bought Vol. 1 in the Grossman series - so I don't know if it starts with easier material. Lonesome Valley (the 1st song on Vol 2) is in G and not too difficult if you play with your pinkie on the high E string, but you do need to slide up to frets 5 and 7. That makes the 1st Traum/Sebastian example easier - John Henry requires the same fingering but stays in 1st position. Hamburger has a different version of the song - Big Bill Broonzy style.
