Description

Claude Debussy wrote his Violin Sonata very late in his life, in the midst of the First World War. He began the work in 1916, after major cancer surgery and extensive chemotherapy treatment had left him in a great deal of pain and discomfort. But he had promised the Sonata to his American Violinist-friend Arthur Hartmann, and he pressed forward to write it. The result is one of the most satisfying and important French Sonatas for Violin and Piano. An opponent of slavish adherence to traditional structure, Debussy beautifully and deftly adapted his own unique chromaticism and compositional style to the Sonata form.

This album also contains three other magnificent French classics adapted to the Violin and Piano form: Debussy's famous Clair De Lune; Gabriel Faure's magical Berceuse; and Saint-Saens' always-popular La Cygne (The Swan). All of these pieces demonstrate the uniquely French qualities these composers communicated to their audiences. They are charming, sonorous and unusual, and lend themselves beautifully to the Violin.

This MMO learning and performance edition features beautiful reference recordings of these magnificent French classics by master Violinist Mario Hossen and virtuoso Pianist Milena Mollova. Then you take center-stage with Ms. Mollova providing the accompaniment for your great performance.
