Description
Clarinettist Mezz Mezzrow was a great admirer of Sidney Bechet and in the mid forties he made many recordings featuring himself along with Bechet for his own record company, the
King Jazz
label. This terrific
Masters Of Jazz
compilation includes sessions from the Mezzrow-Bechet Septet and Quintet. In this set of recordings - made in New York in 1945 and Chicago two years later - Mezzrow supports and accentuates the ever-creative Bechet, demonstrating a pleasant rapport and dazzling interplay.

Review
If Mezz Mezzrow is remembered as a clarinetist of limited abilities, he deserves full credit for recording Sidney Bechet extensively for his King Jazz label in the years 1945 through ’47. Never a great improviser, Mezzrow, however, knew instinctively how to play his lines behind and around Bechet’s majestic soprano and particularly in some slow blues tunes (most of the 22 songs are blues) Bechet seems to sweep the entire band aside with his big sound and authoritative phrasing. If you don’t need the complete King Jazz output, this cross section of 22 quintet and septet tunes gives a good example of one of the more unorthodox partnerships in jazz. A welcome ‘bonus’ is Sammy Price’s strong, two-handed piano playing on several tracks.
