Description

This course is designed to present the easiest possible approach to piano playing, complete with an amusing family of characters and illustrations to help emphasise the information being taught. Part one is devoted to developing fluency in reading by note, the biggest hurdle for most young children. The range is purposely limited. Only five notes up and five notes down from middle C are presented and time values do not go beyond crotchets. Each book of the course contains its own writing exercises, sightreading drills, review work and later, technical studies. Accompaniments for teacher or parent are supplied with most of the examples.

Rating Review
Customer Rating I'm not a piano teacher, but my daughter is learning using this series of books and I think that they are quite good. My only grumble is that progress is quite gentle and, as my daughter already has some musical knowledge, she finished the book very quickly. It could prove to be quite expensive if all the books are finished as easily!!!

Customer Rating This book was really easy to read, clearly laid out and had a good balance of information per page. A good mix of practical labelling exercises as well as simple tunes. I particularly liked that the left and right hands are introduced from the middle C making it much easier to learn the left hand notes (bass clef) and how they fit with the right (treble clef). My 10 year old step son had it as his first book and to start with I talked him through the pages as he went along. Once he got going he only needed to ask for help avary now and then. He finished the book in a weekend and unprompted, proudly entered his name into the back page certificate and mine as his teacher.

Customer Rating Very out of date - it conveys no idea of recent research in piano pedagogy, keeps children refined in middle C position rather than having freedom to move around keyboard. No creative activities. Too mechanical, eye to finger rather than ear to finger, thus not promoting inner hearing.

Customer Rating I always use the John Thompson Modern Course for adult students, but it doesn't suit children so I thought I'd try this out and I'm very happy with it! It progresses very gently, with a new note every few pages and constant revision over the notes learnt, whether from reading drills or theory worksheets. The children also love the pictures, of which there are just enough to keep interest without being distracted.

Customer Rating I learned to play the Piano with this course and I used it when I started to teach Piano. I remember enjoying it and still have my first book! I now want to teach my own children the basics and I like the look of the 'updated' version. It is well laid out and caters for any speed of progress.

Customer Rating I've given up with all beginner tutors and actually use my own now, but this is definately the best of the rest. Nice big print, very easy for students to read and they all LOVE the monsters!

Some of the worksheets are rubbish as the space for the answer doesn't line up with where the questions are but it's good to have integrated theory.

I wouldn't bother going onto Book 2 though as it's very uninspiring.

Customer Rating This is a lovely book for young beginners (I use it with 5 - 7 yr olds). It moves along at a steady pace for them and the inclusion of accompaniments not only makes the simpler tunes sound more interesting but also helps the child develop a feel for the beat.

Customer Rating I was taught using this book many years ago and I love it. Im now a music teacher myself and Ive worked from other books in the past I always have come back to John Thompson!

Customer Rating I used this book when I first started teaching and find it very good at getting students to read music. It has worksheets throughout revising note names and time values, which makes my job a lot easier and also eases them into some music theory. The tunes seem enjoyable to play and the teacher accompaniments make the very basic pieces sound more interesting. A lot of students also like the illustrations. The only problem with this book is that bright students will get through it in a few weeks but it provides a solid grounding in the basics of reading and playing music.

Customer Rating This is not a series I particularly like; I feel there is far too much fingering and students who have started using this series adopt a 'playing by numbers' approach where they read finger numbers in order to identify notes rather than reading the notes themselves.

Customer Rating This is a classic first book for youngsters starting to learn the piano. It starts at the very basics and has them playing tuneful songs by the end of book one. I recommend it for any young beginner starting to learn piano or keyboard to supplement the work they will do in their lessons.
