Customer Rating This is a fabulous piece of music that will work as a superb opener or finale to any concert. Your musicians will have to be competent to master this with strong brass and clarinet sections. This was purchased in 2009 for a school band to perform with some extra supporting brass players.
After an opening fanfare Shostakovich puts the players through some testing themes in a lively two beats per bar returning briefly to the fanfare before the lively finale.
The clarinets are very busy and will have some fast technical scalic passages with many going into the altissimo register. The 1st’s are often playing high G’s and the other clarinets are playing nearly as high to the D#!
The brass parts are challenging with the trumpets often hitting high C’s & C#’s.
There is a passage with some wrong notes including some pretty severe clashes between trombones, horns and clarinets around half way through. This is very disappointing for a published piece though hopefully the newer editions will have this fixed.
That aside the piece is a magnificent transcription working well in the key of Bb provided you have some strong players on each section.
