Customer Rating This book is a departure from the usual method of just presenting pages of named chord boxes for the guitarist to memorise. To get a usable shape for any guitar chord you only need the following:

1. The basic major chord shapes.
2. To be able to name all of the notes on the fretboard.
3. The rules for constructing every chord, using the major as a starting point.

The author gives this information in easy to follow stages with chord diagrams showing how the chords are derived. It is a book to work through rather than use as a reference. There is some musical theory, but I think it would be possible to understand this without being able to read music. There are exercises which you can do as you read through.

If you have been playing guitar for a while and want to develop your chord repertoire beyond the majors, minors and sevenths there is much to be gained from this book – much more than just how to play chords. However, it would be a difficult book for a beginner with no knowledge of music.
