Description

Bach composed his 15 Two-Part Inventions or as he called them, Sinfonias, for Keyboard at the same time as their 15 Three-Part Counterparts.

They are designed to, as Bach himself says: 'To play cleanly in two voices...(and) deal correctly with three obbligato voices...but, above all else, to acquire a true cantabile style of playing, and, with it, to get a good foretaste of the art of composition'.

Customer Rating I am first a foremost a Bach pianist therefore the Inventions are a staple part of the work I teach my students. They are for the grade 5 and over pianist and give the freedom of interpretation implicit in all the works of Bach. Good editions of these should have no phrase marks dynamics or tempo guides, that is the way Bach wrote them and left it to the musicality of the performers to interpret them. Unfortunately some edtions have been ruined by over-editing, poor finger patterns and dynamics placed in the most unusual places. To the Bach interpreter the former are a nuisance and most of the time is spent crossing out poor information. It is interesting to note that some of the so-called establishments of music in this country condone ornamentation so unbelieveably complex that I am sure Bach would have wondered just how they could possibly come to such conclusions. Bach's ornamentation, much the same as interpretation is easy to understand and explain wihout resort to exaggerated hemi-demisemiquaver patterns included in some editions. His music is simple to understand so all can appreciate it, not quite so easy to play but offers the challenge to performers implicit in all great music.
I was taught by a Bach expert and composer and these Inventions together with the Three Part Inventions are excellent examples of the musical thinking fo the great J.S. Bach.
